Kraken is the Wasabi Paddling Club's youth team, and is open to all youth from ages 12-23. Kraken was formed in the summer of 2006 from a group of Cleveland High School paddlers that wanted to continue to paddle beyond the Portland Rose Festival. Although the Rose Festival is a fun event that hosts some deep-rooted high school rivalries, the Cleveland youth quickly learned the thrill of competing internationally.
Today, Kraken is recognized as one of the top youth teams in the sport of dragon boating, medaling in most competitions. Kraken not only competes against other youth teams, they also compete in adult divisions, often qualifying in comptetive adult races. Kraken also had a number of paddlers that were part of the 2008 U.S. National Team which dominated the team from Philadelphia. Kraken's core membership is still from Cleveland HS, but also has memebers from Lincoln, Grant and David Douglas high schools. Kraken members also paddle in the Portland Rose Festival as Cleveland DragonFire and Cleveland DragonFunk.
Kraken is currently coached by the dedicated Randy Stokes along with several other dedicated assistants including Polly Luthro, Jean Quinsey and Kathy Skinner. Kraken is open to all youth ages 12-23 and is always happy to welcome new members. A Drop in anytime to see if this sport is for you.
